Double Digit Subtraction Rhyme

This handy little rhyme can be used to help students decide whether to regroup or not when looking at digits in the ones column.

Week of January 23

Religion
The students will have an assessment over the Holy Trinity. Please look for a triangle organizer to come to home to help your child study! There will be Mass on Wednesday. The students will prepare for Catholic Schools week which begins next Monday.

Everyday Math
Unit 6 continues. The students will begin learning double digit subtraction. While we use the same process all of us learned back in the day :), the vocabulary is different. The biggest difference is the word "regrouping" instead of "borrowing". We have a special rhyme to assist the students as well.

Daily 5
Daily 5 routines and Guided Reading groups Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

Mini-Lessons: -Identifying Main Idea & Details in a non-fiction text

Being a Writer
Last week the students listened to an interview with the owner of Kate and Pippin. This week the students will compose and execute their own interview with a friend. As the week continues, the students will listen to the book How to be a Good Friend and write a journal entry with their own ideas on this topic.

Week of January 17

Religion
The students will finish their study of the Holy Trinity. On Monday, the students will illustrate how Jesus is a model of respect in our lives. Throughout the week the students will identify characteristics of the Holy Spirit. On Friday, the students will learn about the Fruits of the Spirit and how they are present in our own lives.

Everyday Math
Unit 6 begins. This week the students will learn how to add three addends, as well as solve comparison number stories. The majority of the week will be spent reviewing problem-solving strategies and number models. Please look for a new family letter and home links.

Daily 5
Daily 5 routines and Guided Reading groups Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

Mini-Lessons: -Identifying Main Idea & Details in a non-fiction text

Being a Writer
The students will listen to the book Kate & Pippin: An Unlikely Love Story. This is a fascinating book about a deer and fawn who befriend one another. The students will use this non-fiction text to guide their development of writing questions and facts about true information.


Social Studies
Continents Unit continues!  The students will engage in a study of the 7 continents and 5 oceans. The students will learn about the location of each continent, as well as a major land form for each continent. Get ready for a fun and catchy tune sung by your very own!

Happy New Year

Religion
The students will be learning about the Holy Trinity over the next two weeks. We will begin our studies with God, the Father and Creator. The students will learn of God's love for them and how this love protects and guides them through life. The students will end the week learning about their names and how their name was chosen. This will transition into our study of Jesus, the Son and teacher.

Everyday Math
Unit 5 continues. The students will be making pyramids using straws and twisty ties. The focus for the week will be around plane and solid shapes. The students should be able to name the shapes and identify characteristics of the shapes. The students will also complete problem solving tasks. Unit 5 review and assessment this week.

Being a Writer

The students will continue to write about characters and focus on how to develop stories around the idea of a character. Tradebooks include Dogzilla, Brave Charolotte and Honk! As the week comes to an end the students will participate in musical story writing.
